(A Study of
‘Homo-Sound Word’ in Molvi Ahmed Mallah’s poetry)
Abstract
Molvi Ahmed Mallah is rightly known as the King of
Alliteration. Words beginning with same letter-sound in a poetic or prosaic
line is called Alliteration. There are numerous types of the Alliteration,
which are frequently used by the writers/ poets. There is one beautiful
alliteration used by Molvi Sahib that can be named here as ‘Homo-Sound Word’,
that has never ever been identified or discussed by any critic/ writer in any
way, at any place according to my study.
The difference between Alliteration and newly coined
term ‘Homo-Sound Word’ is that the Alliteration contains the different words
beginning with same letter/sound having the different meanings; while on the
other hand, the ‘Home-Sound Word’ are the words having totally same sounds with
different meanings as well as different letter/ letters according to the nature
of Sindhi Language. Example of ‘Homo-Sound Word’ is: .’ڪثرت/ ڪسرت‘ Both these words
are same sounding words, but with different meanings and letter/s in Sindhi
language and can be counted as ‘Homo-Sound Words’. Actually, these words are
borrowed from Arabic language, in which their actual sounds are articulated
differently form the phonetics point of view, but these borrowed words are
pronounced without any sound difference in Sindhi language while keeping in eye
its nature. Sounds like:
’ث، ح، خ، ذ، ص، ض، ط، ظ، ع، غ، ف ق‘ are
peculiar to Arabic Language and can be articulated by native speakers only.
Those sounds have no any existence in group of recognized Sindhi sounds, even
though they are part of Sindhi Alphabet for their great importance in Sindhi
Orthography. It is harder for any Sindhi speaker to articulate those Arabic
sounds phonetically, but pronounce them Allophonically, such as: س for
ث or ص etc.
‘Homo-Sound Word’ like: قمر and ڪمر are studied in Molvi Ahmed Mallah’s poetry
in minute detail in this research paper that make him an exceptional poet in
the galaxy of Sindhi poets.
